Family Dinner at Chaya

(Sing to the tune of "Jingle Bells")

Dashing through the rain,
On a cold San Francisco eve,
Through the wet streets we go,
Escaping puddles along the way!

Canopies to duck under,
To help us stay partially dry,
Eventually we get to Chaya Brasserie,
And meet our family inside.

Oh, family night, family night, family night it was,
Oh what fun we had at Chaya,
Can't wait to see you again!

Oh, family night, family night, family night it was,
Oh what fun we had at Chaya,
Can't wait to see you again!

The Ballet

Last weekend our friends Justin and Marlo invited us to the ballet in Mountain View. This particular production was for the holidays and it was just what we needed to ring in the holiday season. The first half of the performance was a classical ballet with classic holiday music. The second half was a modern "hip" holiday ballet filled with feather boas, santa sharks, tap dancing, and even snow! This year marked the company's 15th Anniversary and they tour throughout the year. Definitely check out their website. You won't be disappointed!

$0.00 - literally.

I have fallen victim to credit card fraud. I swear, the more I talk about it with others, the more I realize it's similar to the Kevin Bacon six degrees game - except it's closer to two or three degrees!

Anyway, without going into the details, my $0 balance checking and savings account combined left me with a heavy heart and a sour taste for humankind. Here are some things I learned last week that I would like to share with you. Hopefully you will never have to refer back to these gems of advice, but in case you do, here they are:

1. Victim-Schmictim

Even though you know you are the victim, the bank will accuse you of stealing your own money. Be prepared to get interrogated by a customer service agent from your bank.

2. The Up sell

After spending 30 minutes of accusations(all of which you can prove wrong), your bank will transfer you to a new customer service agent who wants to sell you a fraud protection program (wait, I have no money left - what am I protecting?). In addition to preparing for the up sell of your account, also prepare yourself to be called Ma'am several times and be told that they understand your frustration in a tone that is less than understanding or sympathetic. Clearly, we're not working with Thespians here.

3. Who exactly do the police "protect and serve"?

My bank told me to contact the police and file a report - otherwise a fraud claim cannot be made or investigated (nor will I get my money refunded ). In my situation, all of the charges were made 400+/- miles from where I live. The bank told me to call the local police station where the fraudulent charges happened. I did. They in turn told me to call my local police station or drive to Pasadena and file a report. I called my local station and they said they could not help me and to call Pasadena again. This run around went on for several phone calls until finally I was told to physically walk into my local police station and make a report. Once I arrived at the police station, I was yet again told they could not help me. By now, I am hysterical and about to shout "You're the Police. Aren't you supposed to help me?". Finally two officers agree to see me (crying sometimes does help). What I learned here is that if you don't have utility and phone bills in your name, get that remedied. Apparently a driver's license, a social security number (with new married name and address attached to the new card), "other bills", and a marriage license will do as a second best but they prefer a bill from your local utility company (wwhhaaaatteeeevvvvverrrrr!).

4. Mug shot

Be prepared to be asked the same interrogative questions the bank asked from the police. But this time, you get the added bonus of getting finger printed and a picture taken. At this point, I really did feel like the thief. I'm amazed they didn't shackle me in the waiting room.

5. Be your own detective

Remember the Brady Bunch episode #69 where Peter becomes "Scoop" Brady? Finally, useless T.V. paid off and I knew what to do! Basically the cops and the bank weren't going to do a thing. So I made phone calls to the merchants that appeared on my statement and asked them what the heck happened. One of the restaurants (Tea House in San Gabriel had my back) looked up my credit card number and said that the owner of the card was Ba Lui. Umm, I don't think so... FYI, I called the bank and the police to tell them this interesting bit of news and neither seemed as interested as I was. My shout out goes to Peter. Thanks "Scoop" Brady for coming to my rescue!

One last thing to mention, don't use an ATM card EVER (according to my bank) unless you are depositing or withdrawing money from their machines only.

Best of luck to you all,

Ba Liu, ah, um, I mean Lori...yeah, Lori....

Black Friday

Black Friday is commonly spent arriving at some strip mall in the wee hours of the morning patiently waiting (unless you're at Wal Mart and feel the need to stampede innocent employees) for the doors to open and the holiday shopping to begin.

For the McCormick's, our Black Friday is spent joining our friends, the Kopeck's, in San Francisco for a night out. We grabbed a delicious bottle of Carlisle, jumped on CalTrain, and one hour later, were in the city. This year we went to Bar Bambino in the Mission. The cozy restaurant has a covered patio with powerful heat lamps. We sat outside and it was quieter than indoors and the temperature was perfect. If you're looking for authentic Italian food and enjoy ordering small plates to share with your friends, this is the place for you.

If you plan on dining at Bar Bambino, we recommend the following dishes (this is to be shared with 4):

*Baked Tomino w/prosciutto

*Small cured plate

*Roasted beet salad

*Egg Bruschette

*Pappardelle with sugo di coniglio

*Braised beef brisket

*Branzino marinated in breadcrumbs and rosemary

*Citrus Polenta cake

*Vanilla Gelato

After an indulgent dinner, our server recommended we walk a few blocks to Monk's Kettle for a couple of beers to cap the night. If you're a beer drinker, enter Monk's Kettle and you just might think you've died and gone to heaven. While we didn't eat there, the food looked amazing and each meal was paired with a variety of beers. We met these really fun people who are definitely beer afficianodos. They set up this website BeersByBart for folks to jump on/off BART and find beer stops along the way.

Hand Me Downs

Recently my friend told me about a website called Hand Me Downs that I feel is worth passing along. Hand Me Downs is an online classified website for people to buy, sell, or donate baby clothes, toys, furniture, childcare services, etc. It's really cool. Think of craigslist but for "all things baby".

Thanksgiving 2008

We spent Thanksgiving in Lodi with Brian's family. Our littlest members, Graham and his twin sisters, Laurel, and Ruby captured our hearts and reminded us of how important it is to be thankful for good friends, family, and lots of joyful moments. Happy Thanksgiving!

Girl's Weekend

Over the weekend, I met up with three of my girlfriends in Paso Robles for a wine tasting weekend. It was great to catch up and enjoy some "girl time". By this time of year, the grapes had been picked and the vines were a hue of rusty red and burnt orange. It truly looked like Autumn. With the weather in the low 70's, we took advantage of the sunshine and had a lovely picnic at L'Aventure after wine tasting. Thanks for the fun memories ladies. I'm already looking forward to our next gathering!
